World Health Organization (WHO)
As its name suggests, the WHO is the UN specialized agency dealing with health. Its objective is to attain the highest possible level of health for all the people in the world. "Health", as defined by the WHO is not only about physical health and the absence of diseases but it is a "state of complete physical, mental and social well-being".
WHO was established in April 1948. Today, its membership amounts to 193 states which are all represented in the World Health Assembly, the governing body of the WHO.
Recently, in November 2006, Margaret Chan of China has been appointed next Director-General of the WHO.
